User Guide

Everything you need to get VideoLibrary set up and working with your personal video collection.

Getting Started

Requirements

VideoLibrary requires Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later. No account, sign-up, or internet connection is required for local libraries.

Installation

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  2. Search for VideoLibrary and tap Install.
  3. Open the app — you'll land on the Library screen.

Permissions

VideoLibrary requests storage permissions to scan and play your video files. On Android 10 and later, access is scoped to your media files only.

  • Read External Storage — required to scan local folders and play files.
  • Internet — only used for WebDAV connections; never used to send your data anywhere.

Adding Sources

Local Folders

VideoLibrary can scan any folder on your device's internal or external storage.

  1. Tap Settings from the bottom navigation.
  2. Select Library Sources.
  3. Tap Add Local Folder and navigate to your video folder.
  4. The app will scan for video files and build your library in the background.

WebDAV Server

Connect to any WebDAV-compatible server — including popular NAS systems like Synology, QNAP, Nextcloud, and more.

  1. Go to Settings → Library Sources → Add WebDAV Server.
  2. Enter the server URL (e.g. http://192.168.1.100/webdav/videos).
  3. Enter your username and password if required. Leave blank for open servers.
  4. Tap Test Connection to verify, then save.
Tip: Use a local IP address (e.g. 192.168.x.x) when connecting from your home Wi-Fi for best performance.

Browsing Your Library

The Library screen is your main hub. Videos are displayed as a scrollable grid with auto-generated thumbnails.

Sorting & Filtering

  • Use the filter chips at the top to narrow by tags, source, or watch status.
  • Tap Sort to order by name, date added, duration, or rating.

Video Detail

Tap any video thumbnail to open the detail view. From there you can play the video, add tags, set a rating, or view metadata like file size and duration.

Playing Videos

VideoLibrary uses ExoPlayer (Media3) for playback. Most common video formats are supported including MP4, MKV, AVI, and MOV.

Playback Controls

  • Tap the screen to show/hide controls.
  • Scrub by dragging the progress bar.
  • Double-tap left/right to skip 10 seconds.
  • Pinch to zoom to fill the screen on different aspect ratios.
  • Lock button prevents accidental touches during playback.

Resume Playback

VideoLibrary automatically saves your position. If you stop partway through, the next time you open that video it will offer to resume from where you left off.

Tags & Search

Adding Tags

Tags are the primary way to organize your library. You can add as many tags as you like to any video.

  1. Open a video's detail screen.
  2. Tap Manage Tags.
  3. Type a new tag name or select an existing one, then tap Add.

Searching

Tap the search icon in the Library screen to search by title or tag. Results update instantly as you type.

Filter by Tag

In the Library, tap any tag chip at the top of the screen to filter your entire library to videos matching that tag. Tap multiple chips to combine filters.
